& RoHs
Background
The European Union’s RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) and WEEE
(Waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment) directives restrict use of the
identified hazardous materials in production of all electrical and electronic
equipment with pre-defined exceptions to (a) certain category of equipment and
(b) necessary use due to current technology limitations. It also requires that
manufacturers and sellers of electrical and electronic equipment properly
dispose off or recycle their equipment at the end of its useful life.
EU’s 2002/95/EC directive defining Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS)
will come into effect on July 1 2006. With exception as applied to specific
technologies and equipment application, it restricts the use of the six
hazardous materials, more than the minimum allowed limits, in the production
of all electrical and electronic equipment. The six substances and their
compounds which are prohibited are:

As of August 13, 2005, the
EU’s Directive 2002/96/EC on WEEE that came into effect requires that
manufacturers and sellers of all electrical and electronic equipment into
European Union’s member state, provide ways to properly dispose of or to
recycle their products once the product has completed its life cycle.
